Dubai Airport’s Click and Travel Service Explained: How It Works

Dubai Airport’s Click and Travel

Dubai International Airport is already one of the busiest hubs on the planet. In 2025 alone, GDRFA Dubai processed over 61 million passengers through its terminals. Most of those travellers know the routine: walk up to a passport desk, hand over documents, wait for the stamp, and move on. Or, if they are eligible, they glide through a Smart Gate in seconds. But starting September 7, 2026, there is a third option that does not involve walking to either.

It is called Click and Travel, and it brings the immigration officer directly to you.

What Is Click and Travel?

Click and Travel is a handheld, mobile immigration service launched by GDRFA Dubai. Instead of passengers queueing at fixed passport control counters, authorised officers carry connected mobile devices through the terminal and process travellers wherever they are standing. Each transaction takes roughly 12 to 15 seconds from start to finish.

The device is essentially a portable biometric verification unit. It reads electronic passports, captures facial recognition data, and runs automated checks against GDRFA’s central systems through a secure communications network. Once the officer confirms the passenger’s identity, the entry or departure record is completed on the spot. Arriving passengers then head to customs. Departing passengers continue straight to security screening.

There is no separate lane to find, no special queue to join, and no app to download beforehand. Airport teams simply deploy officers and their handheld units to areas where passenger volumes are building up.

An officer approaches a passenger in the terminal, scans their electronic passport, and verifies their identity using facial recognition. The device connects in real time to GDRFA Dubai’s databases, running the same security checks that would happen at a fixed desk. If everything clears, the passport control requirement is satisfied immediately.

The system is designed to be flexible. Because the units are mobile, immigration teams can shift processing capacity toward any corner of the terminal where lines are forming. If a flight lands and a sudden surge of passengers hits a particular gate, officers can position themselves right there rather than forcing everyone to walk to the nearest bank of fixed counters.

Families, children, and People of Determination benefit from this approach because officers can come to them instead of requiring them to navigate crowded halls and stand in standard queues.

Who Can Use It?

On the departure side, the service is open to everyone. UAE citizens, residents, and visitors can all have their passports processed through Click and Travel when leaving Dubai. That gives GDRFA a broad tool to ease pressure during peak departure periods.

Arrivals are more limited for now. During the first phase, only UAE citizens and residents can use the mobile service when entering the country. GDRFA has said it plans to expand arrival coverage gradually, but that will depend on operational testing and security approvals.

It is worth noting that Click and Travel is not replacing anything. Dubai airports still have their full infrastructure of fixed passport control desks and automated Smart Gates. This is simply an additional channel that can be activated when and where it is needed.

From Pilot to Full Launch

The service did not appear overnight. GDRFA Dubai began testing the concept back in October 2025 with a pilot programme at Terminal 3. Families were among the first passenger groups to try it. A second phase launched in May 2026, broadening the trial across more terminals and passenger categories.

Between May and August 31, 2026, the pilot handled 31,373 transactions. That real-world testing allowed GDRFA to assess how the devices performed under live airport conditions, how officers moved through crowded halls, and how the technology held up against the pressure of genuine peak traffic.

The official launch on September 7 followed that proven track record. And the authority is already looking ahead. Officials are studying whether additional passenger services beyond entry and departure processing could eventually run through these same mobile devices, though any expansion will need to clear security and operational reviews first.

Why Mobile Passport Control Matters

Fixed immigration desks have one obvious limitation: they are fixed. They sit in predetermined locations, and when passenger flows shift, the queues shift with them. A surge at Gate A does not help the officer sitting at Gate C.

Click and Travel removes that constraint. It allows GDRFA to distribute processing power dynamically across the terminal. During peak traffic, operational pressure, or any situation where passenger volumes spike unexpectedly, teams can literally walk the capacity to where it is needed most.

For a facility that already handles tens of millions of passengers annually and logged over 26 million Smart Gate transactions in 2025 alone, adding mobility to the toolkit is a practical evolution. It keeps the human element of passport control, adds the speed of biometric verification, and removes the bottleneck of physical location.

The Passenger Experience

If you are selected for mobile processing, the interaction is brief. An officer meets you in the terminal, verifies your identity using the handheld device, and you are on your way. There is no separate enrolment, no pre-registration, and no additional fee. You simply need to have your passport ready.

The 12 to 15 second processing time means that even during busy periods, a small team of officers with mobile units can clear a significant number of passengers without adding more permanent infrastructure. For families juggling luggage and children, or for travellers who may struggle with long walks to distant counters, that convenience is meaningful.

Final Thoughts

Dubai has spent years automating its airport experience, from Smart Gates to biometric boarding. Click and Travel adds a different dimension: mobility. By untethering passport control from fixed desks, GDRFA Dubai is giving itself the ability to respond to passenger flows in real time.

The service is live now, expanding gradually, and already processing thousands of travellers a day. If you are passing through Dubai International Airport in the coming months, do not be surprised if an officer approaches you with a handheld device and clears your immigration status before you have even reached the queue. That is the new normal.
